European Roulette: Known as the most popular variant, European Roulette has a single zero on the wheel and a smaller house edge (2.7%) than its American counterpart. This version also has its own betting vocabulary that refers to the European wheel. Here is what each of those bets would equate to on the wheel:
Zero play:
Numbers included: 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15.
Bet: (4 chips) 1 chip on 0/3 split, 1 on 12-15 split, 1 on 26 straight up and 1 on 32-35 split.
Voisins de zero (neighbours of zero):
Numbers included: 22, 18, 29, 7, 28, 12, 35, 3, 26, 0, 32, 15, 19, 4, 21, 2, 25
Bet: (9 chips) 2 chips on the 0-2-3 trio, 1 on each of the splits: 4-7, 12-15, 18-21, 19-22, 32-352 and 1 on 25-26-28-29 corner.
Orphelins (orphans)
Numbers included: 17, 34, 6, 1, 20, 14, 31, 9
Bet: (5 chips) 1 chip on 1 and 1 chip on each of the splits: 6-9, 14-17, 17-20, 31-34.
Tiers
Numbers included: 33, 16, 24, 5, 10, 23, 8, 30, 11, 36, 13, 27
Bet: (6 chips) 1 chip on each of the splits: 5-8, 10-11, 13-16, 23-24, 27-30, 33-36.
Neighbours
Numbers included: five consecutive numbers on the wheel; the bettor selects the middle number and its “neighbours”
Bet: 5 chips, 1 chip straight on each number
American Roulette: Unlike the European version, American Roulette has a double zero number (00) on the wheel. This variant is also considered to be less balanced due to its many adjacent low and high numbered sections. If the wheel does not perfectly alternate between low (0-18) and high (19-36) numbers, it is more likely to be leveraged to the player’s advantage.
